Hergé - Tintin & Milou

Hergé, whose real name was Georges Rem (born May 22, 1907, in Etterbeek; died March 3, 1983, in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Belgium), was a Belgian comic book author, best known for *The Adventures of Tintin*.
Initially an amateur illustrator for a Scout magazine, he began signing his artwork with the pseudonym “ Hergé in 1924. A few months later, he joined the daily newspaper *Le Vingtième Siècle*, where he quickly became a key figure thanks to *The Adventures of Tintin*. The series debuted on January 10, 1929, in a youth supplement to the newspaper, *Le Petit Vingtième*. As the pioneer of the American-style speech-bubble comic strip in Europe, he is often regarded as “the father of the European comic strip.”
During the 1930s, Hergé his artistic work (illustrations for newspapers, novels, maps, and advertisements), while continuing to create comic strips. He created, in succession, *The Adventures of Quick and Flupke* (1930), *Popol and Virginie in the Land of the Lapinos* (1934), and finally *The Adventures of Jo, Zette, and Jocko* (1935). In 1934, he met Tchang Tchong-Jen, a young Chinese student who revolutionized his thinking and his drawing style. After World War II, the character of Tintin brought Tintin European and then international fame. At the same time, he had to face accusations of collaborating with the enemy during the German Occupation and of creating drawings that were sometimes deemed racist, which seriously tarnished his reputation.
During the 1950s and 1960s, as a perfectionist and visionary, he developed a graphic technique in which he would soon become a leading figure: the “clear line” style. After receiving international tributes and a final reunion with Tchang (1981), he died of leukemia in 1983.
